It was as she said, a party of special magnificence.

She had transfigured the library door to appear to be a Hobbit-hole, just like Bilbo's. It wasn't every day you turned fifteen.

The thirtieth of January, not so far from Severus' on the ninth of the same month.

They hadn't celebrated his, because he had never bothered to tell Lily. He had watched the librarian, a sharp-featured woman named Irma Pince, disappear for the day. Lamps were lit. Lily's friend Mary had lit the lamps, and they cast a ghostly glow over the books.

Severus was the only Slytherin there. There were three Gryffindor girls, a Ravenclaw boy and his Hufflepuff girlfriend.

It was safer to leave the room.

There was a bark right behind him hidden in a laugh and a sharp prod in the back. “All right there, greaseball? I say we call a truce for now. For her.”

“Black! Where's your gang to back you up?” Severus span round on his heel when Sirius spoke.

“Might want to lighten the tone. We're at a party. Relax.” Sirius made a wide gesture with his hands.

Severus fumed as Lily caught his black eyes with her green ones and gave him an approving nod.

If only this were Hobbiton, he would disappear into a deep cellar and never emerge again. Did Black catch the references to a Muggle children's tale? Severus almost cricked his neck turning back to glare at the amused grey eyes that belonged to Black.

Black was taller. By a long shot. His hand was resting over his robe pocket, no doubt seeking the reassuring touch of his wand.

Severus stared from Sirius Black to Lily. Then his stomach contracted, and he felt physical revulsion. Not this, not this, not this.

This perfect creation of a party suddenly lost its magnificence. The Muggle references seemed worn, not charming, and limited. If it was to be between him and the gang of roving beasts that traversed his lands, tormenting him, and her peace of mind, he would have to give her a piece of his mind.

Not wanting to turn his back on Black he moved sideways through the dim light, keeping Sirius in view, a twitchy walk born of many ambushes.

He moved to the red-haired girl that was never his, never would be his, and who he believed in. Now she was showing her vapid catlike likings.

“You keep making me leave you,” he said, standing slightly too close to her, his greasy hair falling across his face. He flicked it aside nervously. “Keep making me the despicable one. Keep forcing me to keep my distance. You invited Black.”

“Yes, I did. I don't have a problem with either of you. It's between you two, it has nothing to do with me.”

“You're the apex.”

“Severus, what are you talking about? The whole world doesn't center on me or you or him! This is a party. Sit down wherever you like, in some dark corner if you have to, I want you here.”

“Me or him?” It was as if he hadn't heard a word.

She didn't answer and her lower lip trembled. “Sev, Severus, Severus Snape! You always have to ruin and wreck, can't you just sit down and keep your overwrought senses to yourself?”

Sirius sighed, his waves of black hair swept back with a long hand, his face much more handsome than the skinny one with the hooked nose, Severus thought.

And Severus stalked out of the room, knowing he was driving her right at him and caring too much. There was nothing between them? Perhaps not. Maybe she would come to him. But he had climbed out of the Hobbit-hole, leaving Middle Earth and the Elven Lily behind, as usual.
